2018 Domaine Saint Prefert, Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge, Rhone Valley, France

The 2018 Châteauneuf du Pape reveals a ruby/purple hue and is slightly opaque. Based on 85% Grenache and 5% each of Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault, it offers a gorgeous perfume of black raspberries, herbes de Provence, ground pepper, candied orange, and a touch of spiced meat. Pure class on the palate, with medium to full-bodied richness and ultra-fine tannins, it has terrific balance, a layered, elegant mouthfeel, and a great finish. Located in the Southern part of the appellation, this impeccably run estate is owned and managed by Isabel Ferrando whom purchased it in 2004 and it is now one of the newer hot properties in Chateauneuf du Pape along with her other property, Domaine Ferrando. Isabel’s philosophy is to make wines that reflect the most her distinct and unique terroirs with their original grapes planted on an average of 60 years ago. Knowing that great wines start in the vineyards, Isabel has four time more people working the soils and refusing to spray pesticides. This wine is gloriously rich and full-bodied but balanced with a bright and clean minerality carried by the majority of Clairette. It is opulent but not overblown with aromas of exotic fruits, almonds, jasmine flowers, honeysuckles, citrus and spices.
