2018 Gros Ventre High Country Red Blend, El Dorado County

2018 is the third vintage of Gros Ventre's charming High Country Red, — a blend of 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Gamay —and has the highest percentage of Gamay in it to date. In the glass, the wine shows a brilliant, light garnet color with ruby highlights. Intense aromas of ripe strawberry, raspberry and pomegranate explode from the glass, mingled with a savory, spicy-herbal undertone. Flavors of crunchy and juicy red berry fruits positively burst on the palate alongside an added floral complexity, complimented by a fresh, invigorating acidity and soft, gentle tannins that balance the wine to perfection as it seamlessly flows into a multi-faceted, refreshing finish. I've never found a California wine in this style with as much flavor and character as Gros Ventre's High Country Red, especially at a price like this! You can enjoy the wine on its own with a slight chill, though it would pair beautifully with a classic roast chicken with all the sides or dry-rubbed pork chops.
